China Hat

• Forward (Long)

  • Slave Targeting pod to steer point

Needs to be equipped to use any of the guided bombs.

Start-up

• Set TGP:ON (below)

• Set LASER:ARM if laser guidance is going to be used with the laser guidance.

Note: Targeting pod will take about 3 minutes to start up.

One the targeting pod is setup

• Green diamond indicates where targeting pod is looking

To Reset Targeting Pod View

• Go to standby then back to Air to Ground

Laser frequency

• Good idea to change a few up or a few down when flying with other planes

  • Prevents targeting pod from acquiring another aircraft's laser guidance.

Latch:ON

• Used to turn on / off laser with press of a button (vs having to hold all the time.)

The aircraft knows where it is in 3D space due to the INS lock that occurs during the start-up procedure.

The targeting pod can compute the location in 3D space of a point that the targeting computer is pointing to by looking at its position in 3D space, combined with the direction and angle that the targeting computer is looking at in conjunction with topographical maps that are loaded into the targeting pod.

A specific point in the 3D space that is marked by the targeting computer is called a SPI.  Pointing at a location with the targeting computer does not mark a SPI.

A SPI can be marked by pressing TMS Up (Long) while the Targeting Pod is selected as a SOI.

SPI is a marker on the ground that is used for targeting.  The aircraft knows its position in 3D space assuming that INS had completed during the start-up procedure.

Point mode

• Only use when you are tracking a moving target

Area mode

• Always use unless the target is moving, otherwise you could start tracking an object that moves / drives in front of the actual target

Targeting Pod (SOI)

• TMS Up (Long)

  • Set SPI to targeting pod reticle

• TMS Up (Short)

  • Moves between point and area mode

  • Use point mode to have the targeting track a target (such as a moving target)

• TMS Left (Short)

  • Clear messages (such as errors) on the MFD

• DMS Up / Down

  • Zooms targeting pod in and out

• Boat switch Aft/Forward

  • Change targeting pod polarity

• China Hat Forward (Short)

  • Zooms more than max at DMS Up
